    The basic rules of sales can be reduced to the acronym AIDA.

    AIDA stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.

    You have to make sure that when somebody reads your personal ad, it automatically gets their attention.

    You have to keep their attention by filtering them out quickly.

    If people aren’t interested in what you’re interested in, filter them out quickly.

    This is why you need to spell out what your interests are as quickly as possible.

    Assuming that they follow you through the second stage of the process, the next step is to awaken desire.

    How do you do this?

    You basically focus on what their needs are and you spell out what your particular solution is, what exactly do you bring to the table as far as value propositions are concerned.

    Finally, you need to call them to action.

    You’d be surprised as to how many online ads fail time and time again because they suck at calling people to action.

    I’m sorry to break this to you, but “email me” or “click here” are not calls to action.

    Effective calls to action always pair a benefit with an emotional state and an action.

    A good example of this would be: “To finally say goodbye to your pimple problems and start living life to the fullest, click here.”

    You see what I just did there?

    About thisI paired an emotional appeal, which is to live your life to the fullest, with a specific benefit, which is to get rid of your acne problems, and then hitched the actual action that I want to see occur (”click here”) to that sentence.

     

    Effective copywriting is not going to happen overnight; it takes a lot of practice.

     

    But the more you do it, the better you get at it.
